ABOUT SOAP
Soaps are mainly used as surfactants for washing, bathing, and cleaning. We wash, bath and clean everyday. So, we use soap everyday? Not exactly true. Early soap manufacturers simply boiled a solution of wood ash and animal fat. A layer of substance formed at the top of the pot. When cooled, the substance hardened into soap. Around 1940, a more efficient continuous manufacturing process was developed, this process is commonly used by larger soap producer today.
Soap requires two major raw materials: 1) fat and 2) alkali. The alkali most commonly used today is sodium hydroxide. While potassium hydroxide can also be used. Animal fat is obtained from a slaughterhouse. Various vegetable fats, including olive oil, palm kernel oil, and coconut oil, are also used in soap making.
